The "block party" is in Detroit, not Portland.

The advertising theme this year in Portland has been "block party", but the real party is in Detroit. The Detroit Pistons became the first NBA team since 73-74 to have 4 players block at least 4 shots each in one game on Dec. 27 against the Nets. In addition, Ben Wallace is closing in on Terry Tyler's record of 1070 blocks.

"...The Elias Sports Bureau has confirmed that the Pistons are the first NBA team to have four players block four or more shots in the same game since block statistics were kept in 1973-74. Antonio McDyess, Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince each swatted four shots against the Nets on Dec. 27.
... Speaking of blocks, Ben Wallace went into Thursday's game needing five more to reach 1,000 for his Pistons career. He is closing in on Terry Tyler's team record (1,070

Blazers vs San Antonio Spurs

There comes a time when there is no choice but to face reality. Blazer fans will likely have a healthy dose of it tonight. It's no secret that the Spurs are playing great basketball right now and the Blazers are not. Add to this the fact that we are without Shareef and it just doesn't look good for Portland. In addition, tonight's game is a TNT game. These games have often served as a curse for the Blazers. Wins on TV are just not common for us. I head to tonight's game with hope. I know a win is not impossible. I want to see the team give it their all. I know they have it in them to get this win. Play hard, play smart, hit your free throws and DEFEND!
Game Preview

UPDATE: I can sum it up in two words: ROCK BOTTOM. BTW, Reef played. I was suprised.

GO BLAZERS!

Shareef's elbow still a problem.

'...the good news was that Tuesday night's magnetic resonance imaging revealed no structural damage in the elbow. The bad news was there was significant swelling, probably caused by what doctors call a "loose body" floating around the joint, most likely a bone fragment. Abdur-Rahim is expected to have fluid drained from his elbow today..." Source: Oreonlive.com

This is starting to sound like Scottie Pippen's knee. I don't see this as good news for the Blazers at all. This hurts Reef's trade value and it prevents him from playing for us. We NEED help, whether it is from Shareef or someone else.

Jimmy Jackson traded to Hornets.

There seems to be a lot of questions surrounding today's trade between Houston and New Orleans. Today David Wesley was traded to Houston for Jim Jackson and Bostjan Nachbar .(ESPN.com)
Folks at NBAWire seem to be thinking that these 2 teams are not finished yet.

I am wondering if this would be an opportunity for the Blazers to get JJ back? He's a solid guy and a great shooter. He was well liked in Portland as far as I know. What do you think?
Jim Jackson

12/30 UPDATE: Jim Jackson is not a happy camper. The Hornets may very well end up having to do something and I think Nash should pay attention. JJ has already been fined for not reporting: "The Hornets on Wednesday suspended newly acquired guard Jim Jackson for failing to report within 48 hours following his trade from the Houston Rockets.
Jackson, apparently miffed at being traded to the team with the worst record in the NBA, is subject to numerous fines from the Hornets and the NBA..."

Portland Trailblazers vs Philadelphia 76ers

Allen Iverson comes to Portland shooting 57%! In the past weeks he has had 2 consecutive 50 point games and one 40 point game. He got 10 steals against Indiana last Wednesday. Personally I hope Allen had a great holiday and ate a lot of sweets. Maybe that will slow him down!

Portland came home prior to Christmas from a 6 game road trip. They went 3-3. Tonight is the first home game since then. I fully expect NVE to stay in his starting position against Iverson. This may be the night we get our answer to the lingering question as to who will start, Darius or Reef? I expect it to be Darius. I assume Ha will be on hand but do not expect to see him play at all. Telfair may see time tonight to help NVE, along with Damon, in keeping up with Iverson. These games after holidays can be brutal. I know my first day back at work sure has been! I'd say Blazers have the home advantage, but that is about it. They are going to have to use their defensive abilities against the rest of the team while trying to at least stimey AI.
Game Preview

UPDATE: Well, in my opinion, this game was winnable. AI couldn't find his shot until the 4th. Unfortunately, when AI found his shot, we lost out defense. I don't know. These games are frustrating. Post game radio had callers pointing their fingers at Cheeks. Others were calling out Zach. The mood in Portland is uneasy. We had an opportunity slip through our fingers. AI gets 28 and we still lose. Go figure.
BOX SCORE

Rasheed Wallace reflects on Portland...sort of.

"...Although the Pistons have struggled this season, Wallace is having the time of his life. He had a Christmas Eve talk with Ham and told him how comfortable he feels. He appreciates playing for a veteran team, with married teammates who have families.
Behind all his jokes and past transgressions, Wallace is a family man who loves time with his wife and kids. That's one reason he said he turned down an opportunity to play for Team USA in the Athens Olympics.

When Jerry Stackhouse was with the Pistons, he encouraged them to trade for Wallace. Stackhouse said that behind Wallace's bad-boy image, there was a man yearning for peace and a family atmosphere.

Wallace says many of his emotional outbursts in Portland stemmed from his frustration of playing with younger teammates. But Wallace set a bad example by letting his emotions overcome him and earning technical fouls in bulk quantities.

"I can be a totally different person (with the Pistons)," Wallace said. "I don't have to say much to this team. They are all veteran players. They know what to do in different situations.

"In Portland there were younger guys and it was harder (on defense, thinking), 'I've got to play his man and another man.' On this team I know Ben (Wallace) don't want a double team. I know Chauncey don't really need any help on top. But playing with younger guys there are more things you've got to do, and at times it can get frustrating..."
Source: DetNews.com

Who would Rasheed being referring to? Damon and Bonzi? Maybe, but they were his pals. Arvydas and Pip? No, they were the veterans. Is this yet another finger pointing at Zach?

I have to say I am finding it amusing that the Detroit press seems to have no problems at all getting interviews with Rasheed. I wonder why that is? *sarcastic question*

Blazers sign Ha Seung Jin.

The Portland Trail Blazers have signed Center Ha Seung-Jin. The 7-foot-3, 305-pound rookie was selected by the Trail Blazers in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft. Ha had been playing with the Portland Reign of the American Basketball Association. Source: Blazers.com

This will not be good news for the Portland Reign but for the Blazers it may be, one day anyway. For now Ha will probably never see the floor but at least he can practice with the team. This will allow him to improve his game at a higher level. I still have to wonder what Nash is thinking.

Is Zach Randolph the next Rasheed Wallace?

Today I have to voice an opinion that I know some will disagree with. I don't care. I am angry at what I see brewing here in Portland. History seems to be repeating itself. It is looking to me as if Jason Quick has chosen Zach Randolph as his next Rasheed Wallace. Here are two clips from yesterday's "Quick chat" that is featured at Oregonlive.com:

Would the Blazers consider trading Zach Randolph and keeping Shareef Abdur-Rahim?Quick's take:"After what we've seen this year, why not build around Shareef and look to trade Zach? To me...Shareef is a more complete player."

What about Randolph's defense?Quick's take:"As (Theo Ratliff) was walking off the court (in Atlanta), Theo said to Maurice Cheeks, "The guy doesn't even want to play." He was disgusted (at Zach)."
Source:Oregonlive.com

I live here. I read and hear local media. It is no secret that Rasheed Wallace was targeted by Jason Quick (and others) of the Oregonian. Rasheed was certainly not a choir boy but he also wasn't the monster that Quick made him out to be relentlessly. Quick wrote about Rasheed in such a negative manner so often that national media began to echo his words. This created a no win situtation for Rasheed. The outright meanness that resulted created the atmosphere that ultimately led to Rasheed being traded to Atlanta. I was thrilled to see Rasheed get his ring with Detroit. For me it was sort of an "in your face moment" for Rasheed and his Portland area fans that feel that he was railroaded out of town.

I am now beginning to see this very same thing happening to Zach Randolph. Prepare for much more and much harsher criticism of Zach coming out of Portland. Zach is viewed as a good player that is learning by most of the NBA fans. Pay attention to reports you hear out of Portland. Pay attention at how they begin to affect fan perceptions. Yes, it is happening again. I may get flack for this but I believe it. I honestly believe that this one "beat reporter" can not help himself. The attacks have begun. Zach may as well start packing his bags. I predict he will eventually move on, and like Sheed, he'll be wearing the bling bling while the Blazers continue to try and overcome. Thanks Jason.

You want to tell me that what Quick says is true? I agree, at times it is. The problem is how it is reported, and when. Did Theo say what Jason says he did? Probably, but remember context. The emotion of the game is often the place where little nuggets like this are mined. How Jason processes these "sound bites" leaves a lot to be desired. With a quote from Theo, the groundwork is being laid that will likely grow into local controversy which will then hinder any hope of Zach learning what his team wants from him. Instead Zach will have to spend energy fighting off the ramifications of negative reporting.

Everyone can see that the Blazers indeed have a problem with Zach and Shareef. Many fans are wishing that we would focus more on building around Shareef. I have those thoughts myself. What I do NOT agree with is attacking Zach to make my point.

Hoopshype interview with Zach Randolph.

I wish they would have asked Zach about passing! Still, it's a fun interview.

"...This is your fourth year in the NBA, and in each and every year you have gotten better. Last year, you were chosen the league's Most Improved Player after you averaged 20.1 points, almost 12 points more than the year before. This season you're averaging 20.6 points and 10.8 rebounds, which is the sixth-best in the NBA. How good can you become?

ZR: I think I can be real good. I'm going to continue to work hard and get better and help my teammates getbetter. If I keep working, I know I'm going to be even better than I am now..."

I don't know if this will help us keep NVE for the season or not. I hope so. There has been talk that the Mavs are looking to get him back. I wonder if NVE is saying this to fend off a trade? It wouldn't be a bad tactic. I think NVE is liking his leadership role here in Portland. We need his ability to communicate team needs to the players without provoking tempers. In a world where ego plays as much a role as talent, having the ability to communicate effectively is essential. Cheeks has used this ability the past few years to keep a very valatile Blazer team together. Now NVE is using it to help players accept new roles. I said yesterday that if NVE can get Damon to accept coming off the bench, and mentor Telfair until he is ready to start, we may really be onto something here in Portland.

Portland Trailblazers vs Milwaukee Bucks

I am sure that the team is glad to know that this is the last game of a very long road trip. There is no doubt they want to end it on a win and at least get a split on this road trip at 3-3. According to the Oregonian Shareef will not play again tonight and Derek Anderson is questionable, he is battling the flu. Darius and Theo are both nursing calf injuries but are expected to start.

The guys are battered, tired and looking for hope. Milwaukee has lost 4 in a row. Portland won the last meeting and outrebounded the Bucks 52-39. Rebounding has slipped lately for the Blazers. With a full and healthy roster, this would be a tough game for Portland. It's been a long hard road trip. Maybe with a Christmas break awaiting, the guys will dig deep and end this thing on a positive note. I expect a good game from Damon and Zach. Let's hope Darius can hit his free throws! I also expect to see Travis Outlaw get good playing time tonight. There has been talk about how well he has been doing. Play him Mo!
Game Preview

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: Blazers win! Merry Christmas! Seriously, it was a decent win. Holding Redd to 4 points is notable, kudos to DA. I was suprised to not see Outlaw and Telfair get more time in this game. I know the guys will be happy to get home and have Christmas. It was said that the team was going to bus down to Chicago, spend the night, and practice before they head home. Good idea Mo. We have Iverson and the Sixers on the 27th. I hope the guys have a relaxing and fun break with their families and come back energized for the stretch to February's trade deadline. As it stands, I am now hoping for NO TRADES. NVE is doing a fantastic job at the point!

Darius Miles or Shareef Abdur Rahim? Who starts?

Once again the infamous Blazer logjam is creating problems. The Blazers are stacked at the forward position and the conflict over who starts and who comes off the bench is beginning to boil. Reef and Miles both are deserving starters. Reef was promised the job, yet Miles seems to depend on it. Reef proved before that he can thrive off the bench. Darius has struggled. When Reef was injured, Miles started and his contributions increased. Even though Rahim and Miles are not publicly complaining, one would be an idiot to think that this situation makes either of them happy, especially when it forces to them to play outside their position, and decreases their minutes. Unhappy players are not the most productive players. Nash orchestrated this situation, and it seems, for now, he is content to force coach Cheeks to fix it for him. Fortunately for Mo, he won't have to make that decision tonight in Milwaukee, Reef won't be playing.

"...Normally there would be no question about the starting role, as Cheeks always has lived by the rule that a player loses his job because of his play, not an injury. And there have been no questions regarding Abdur-Rahim's play: he is the Blazers' second-leading scorer (15.3 points) and rebounder (7.8) while shooting 50.5 percent from the field.

But as Abdur-Rahim has nursed his sore elbow, Miles has emerged as a force as a starter, evoking memories of last season when his high-flying, up-tempo play injected life into the Blazers season after he was traded from Cleveland. In the first five games of this trip, Miles is averaging 16.8 points, 7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 3.2 steals and 2.4 blocks, and is shooting 56.9 percent from the field...

If anything is clear, it appears that both Abdur-Rahim and Miles will handle Cheeks' decision professionally. In fact, Miles said there shouldn't even have to be a decision.

"He's the starter," Miles said. "He's one of our go-to guys. It ain't hard to see. He knows what it is. I know what it is. There isn't any need to feel me and there doesn't even need to be any bring-me-in-the-office type deal. That stuff is for the birds. When (Abdur-Rahim) says he is ready to play, put him in as the starter and see what he does. I know I've got confidence in him. It's his spot. It ain't my spot. This stuff is old."

Abdur-Rahim, meanwhile, appeared taken aback that there would be any suggestion that he would lose his starting job. "I guess Maurice has got to do whatever he has to do," Abdur-Rahim said. "I mean, what? What am I supposed to say? I will say I think I feel comfortable starting. But I'll have to adjust with a different role if it happens, I guess. But I have felt good in the role I have been playing...

But Cheeks acknowledges that it will be a sticky situation, one in which he probably can do no wrong, and no right..." Source: Oregonlive.com

Does Dallas have anyone we'd want?

"...Sources say the Mavericks tried to concoct a last-minute, three-way deal involving Vince Carter (to Portland) that would've harvested Shareef Abdur-Rahim for them.
It's unknown what Dallas was offering Toronto. What's known is the pointless Mavs have ardent interest in re-acquiring Nick Van Exel. Or any other up-tempo floor leader who might have an inkling how to distribute shots and get Erick Dampier involved in the offense, because, obviously, it's beyond Don Nelson to figure it out..."
Source: NewYorkPost

I am aware that Peter Vescey is not the best source of information, but if this is true, perhaps Dallas is a team we can look to for a possible trade.

However, I am not so sure a trade is what we need. I think readjustment of roles could be more helpful. I think the team has improved even though we have lost some winnable games. I want to see how the team does with Reef back in the line up and Damon coming off the bench. The hitch could be over who should start, Reef or Darius. Darius seems to be more productive when he starts. Reef deserves to start. Tough call.

NVE seems to be doing well starting for us. I was impressed at his handling of replacing Damon. NVE did the right thing when he went to Damon and talked to him about switching places. On a post game interview after the Piston game NVE said that he and Damon had spent a lot of time talking it over together. Nick was able to make this transition palatable to Damon which protected team chemistry. In fact, I think it improved team chemistry. Damon Stoudamire is the reason we need to keep NVE. I am not one to bash Damon. There are those that think he is terrible. I do not. I think Damon is important to our team. However, I believe it is time for Damon to take a lesser role. He has been the starting PG for many years. This can't be easy for him but I think he can do it.

Many players do not start their entire careers. I think NVE being able to help Damon accept a bench role can be intrumental in allowing us to keep Damon as a back up PG. My hope is that Telfair takes over the starting role eventually. I like having NVE in the starting position. He's an older vet that has the tenure to stand in the middle as Damon moves to the bench and Telfair to the starting lineup. We can re-sign Damon to a lesser contract next year and he can remain a Blazer. I like Damon off the bench, he can play both PG and guard. He can take a lesson from Steve Kerr. I'll never forget him taking that bow after playing just a couple seconds and nailing a much needed 3. Why not let Damon be one of our bench shooters?

Can NVE accomplish this by February? If so, perhaps we can use this situation to our advantage. That is, if it's true at all! Remember, this is Vescey information.

Portland Trailblazers vs Chicago Bulls

Tonight's game is an important game for the Blazers. The guys are coming off a hard win against Detroit and trying to make it 3 in a row on the road. Trade rumors are stirring between the Blazers and Chicago regarding Eddy Curry and Reef. This could be a distraction since both players will be in the game. I think the Blazers are feeling very confident right now and I don't look for them to give this one up without a fight. It will be interesting to see who gets the start tonight, Reef or Miles. Reef may be upset at being sent back to the bench, but so would Darius. This is not a decision I would want to make. My guess is that Darius will start. He should start for no other reason than we have been winning and that is too important to mess with things right now. If Damon can come off the bench, so can SAR.

Update: Well, I just learned that Reef is questionable for tonight's game. Perhaps they can suit him up and only use him only if they really need him. Let him get rested. We won't know until game time I guess. I won't be too worried, we beat the Piston's without him. I'd feel better if Zach wasn't in a funk. If he does play, I wouldn't be suprised to see him take a lot of Zach's minutes.

I found this Chicago take from a fellow blogger:
"...Their frontcourt of Zach Randolph and Theo Ratliff is going to be a big test, and Tyson might be pressed into action early if Randolph starts hot. Skiles should consider putting Eddy Curry on Randolph. Randolph uses his size to muscle other forwards into position, something he can't do with even a slimmed-down Eddy..."

Game Preview

UPDATE: OUCH. This is a bad loss. It was winnable, so I hear. I missed the game. I must say that it has been difficult to Christmas shop knowing that there is a game on! This loss will erase the big win over the Pistons. I sure will be glad when Reef is back. Obviously we need him.

Shareef Abdur Rahim for Eddy Curry?

It isn't the trade possibility that has my goat today, it is the reputation that Zach is garnering in the league. This is NOT allstar behavior Zach. There is no excuse for it. If Zach keeps this up it may very well be his name on the block and not SAR's.

Abdur-Rahim is a power forward who can score, is a good teammate and fits the Bulls' style. If the Blazers would throw in shooting guard Derek Anderson, the Bulls would have a nice three-guard rotation with Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich. With Chandler at center, the Bulls should be a playoff team this season. And with some salary-cap room on the horizon, the future could look pretty good.

The Blazers definitely want to do something, though of late their problem has been the guy they want to keep, Zach Randolph.Portland has won two straight to get to 12-11, but coach Maurice Cheeks benched Randolph, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, for the last four minutes of a victory Saturday over Detroit. Randolph also was criticized last week by teammates for being selfish and pouting.

Yes, Curry is a post player like Randolph. (That's why Jerry Krause said he traded Elton Brand: having two post players doesn't work.). So there's a risk for everyone. Abdur-Rahim is in the last year of his contract, but the Bulls should be able to persuade him they have something going. The Blazers don't want long-term contracts at big money, and the Bulls could put together a package without that. Curry and Randolph could be a pretty formidable front court. Source: ChicagoTribune

Scottie Pippen considers broadcasting.

Scottie Pippen said most of his endorsement deals have expired and that his shoe contract with Nike was "never good to begin with." He plans to do some media training in the next month in preparation for a possible career in broadcasting. "I'm not looking for a job yet," Pippen said. "But I've done it before and I want to be well-polished if I'm going to put myself on a national stage. I used to do a local Sunday deal here with Fox, and I did a game with Red [Kerr] and Tom [Dore] the other night."
Source:Chicago Tribune

Personally I am hoping Pip considers coaching. I'd love to seem him on the bench here in Portland. While Pip played for Portland, there was a good deal of time that he practically was the coach! I think he would be great at it. He could come here and start as an assistant coach.

Blazers vs Atlanta Hawks

If we can't win this game then the Blazers are probably facing the worst season they have ever had. The Atlanta Hawks are 4-18. Only New Orleans is worse at 2-19.

Shareef is questionable for tonight's game and that is a shame. I am sure he would like to show Atlanta what they gave up. Although, in light of our season it is not going to pack much of a punch, so maybe he would rather sit on the bench! I would like to think we could win without him so he can be fresh when we get to Detroit Saturday. This is the second set of back to backs for the Blazers this road trip. Detroit will require energy both physically and mentally due to the Rasheed factor. Let's hope tonight is an easy win that will serve as a stepping stone to a win in Detroit.

Blazers vs Detroit Pistons

HOLY COW! They did it! Granted, the Pistons had a terrible shooting night. However, with Zach not being able to hit any better, maybe we were even. I was out of town and didn't get to see this game but managed to hear the 4th quarter on the radio. I thought Wheeler was going to explode. I don't have much time at the moment but wanted to at least acknowledge that we beat the Pistons. Great Great Great win! I want to talk later about NVE talking on the post game show about his talk with Damon. Interesting.

BRAVO BLAZERS!

Vince Carter traded to New Jersey Nets

Thank goodness! I am SO glad to hear this trade has happened. I wouldn't have minded getting Vince but I sure didn't want Jason Kidd. I think now that Vince is a Net, Jason will stay put. This is indeed VERY GOOD NEWS for many Blazer fans! Source: ESPN.com

Nash pegs guard play as Blazer's problem.

"Obviously, we have struggled from the perimeter -- hopefully that is not going to continue -- but it's been a symptom that has lasted for a significant period of time now, so it's a concern," Nash said. "It's clearly the area (where) we have the most glaring problem, and I would hope it would correct itself with the players on the roster, but I can't guarantee that . . . so whether we improve that with the personnel we have or with other personnel remains to be seen." Source: OregonLive

In a way I am glad to hear Nash say this. It give me hope that he is more interesting in a shooter rather than a PG. We have a great up and coming PG. Telfair is a keeper and that is that. Nash would have a firestorm of backlash from fans should he trade Sebastian. I'll cut right to the chase. Any deal including Telfair will prove that Nash is absolutely clueless to what Portland fans want and what the team needs. I say this because the rumor is that Telfair is what the Nets want for Jason Kidd. Kidd is NOT WORTH IT! Don't be stupid John!

In keeping with my hope that Nash is more interested in a shooter, I think he is trying to be cautious. It is no secret that Paul Allen's wallet is much tighter now than it was with "Trader Bob". John Nash is being forced to play by different rules. However, I am questioning whether his delay in helping this team is simple prudence, or does he really believe what he says when he says "...I still think we are a decent team that has a playoff chance," Nash said. "I think we could have won a couple more games at this point, but I also recognize that our shooting woes are not characteristic of the players' career numbers..."

I would love to bash Nash, but it just doesn't seem to be the thing to do. At this point a Blazer fan can only hope that Nash is being wise in waiting. We all know that a few wins can change a season. I sure hope that begins to happen SOON! We don't want a bad trade. We do have good players and in order to do a decent trade we will have to give them up. Is that what we want to do? I am speaking of SAR. Is is worth losing a solid player like him to take a gamble on a trade?

I would implore Zach Randolph to listen to his teammates pleas and pass the ball. Zach's behavior in Cleveland bothers me. When you compare the maturity of guys like LeBron James to that of Zach Randolph, the difference is pretty big. Zach has plenty of talent, yet he just doesn't seem to "get it". The good news is that this can change. Come on Zach, you alone can turn this thing around. If you don't have an OPEN shot, pass the ball! More touches for the guards is the only way to get them out of this slump. If they don't have a shot they will pass the ball back to you. It seems so simple. What a frustrating time for Blazer fans.

Would Jason Kidd help or hurt PR wise?

A trade is in the air. I have read rumors at O-Live and NBAWire and have heard a few tidbits on my own. I know we keep going through this, but something is going to give eventually. One thing said today is that Toronto and Portland both waived players today. This indicates possible movement and a LOT of speculation. I have seen nothing about the Nets. However, I had a conversation with someone today that works within the Blazer organization. It made me think.

It was said that the fan response to possibly bringing Jason Kidd to Portland has been split down the middle 50/50. There seems to be a fear that Kidd would cause a rift among fans that management has tried very hard to mend. Basically it would return us to the Love Sheed/Hate Sheed environment. We all know how awful that was. Would Nash dare to knowingly create such a rift again?
I've been up front on my feelings about Jason Kidd. I do NOT want him here, period.

What do you think?

OH YEAH! Thanks for the reminder XericX! Jason Kidd also publically disrespected our franchise and city by saying he wouldn't play if he was traded here! Is this what we want? I say NO!

Geno Carlisle waived.

I knew it was coming, I was hoping it wouldn't. Perhaps this means that moves are going to be made soon. The timing is questionable. Perhaps Frahm is coming back?

December 16, 2004 The Portland Trail Blazers have waived Guard Geno Carlisle. Carlisle averaged 1.3 PPG in six games with the Trail Blazers this season. The Trail Blazers are currently in the midst of a six game road trip and will return to the Rose Garden when they face the Philadelphia 76ers on December 27

12/16 UPDATE: See what Joel had to say!

What are we going to do about Zach?

"...At the center of the mental breakdown was Randolph, who reverted to his tunnel vision of scoring two games after his teammates pleaded for him to pass more. Randolph touched the ball 16 times Wednesday and passed once -- which resulted in a dunk by Joel Przybilla.

Apparently, Randolph was unhappy about not getting the ball enough, and after he made a poor pass in the third quarter that resulted in a turnover, Van Exel jumped on Randolph during a timeout.

"Where's your head?" Van Exel barked. "Damn, we go to you every time."

Randolph tuned out Van Exel's ire, turning his head the other way during the timeout. By the time Cheeks reached the huddle to diagram a play, Randolph still was despondent, causing Cheeks to stop what he was saying and shake his head..."
Source: OregonLive.com

Zach Randolph is supposed to be the foundation of our team. How can we be strong when he behaves like this? Just the other day he was saying that he was willing to do what the team needed, he said he was going to start passing the ball. I have to question Nash, Patterson and Allen in their team building decisions. Before them, it was Whittsit. It seems that no matter what players we have had or have these past 6? years, the Blazers never become a cohesive unit. With all Paul's money, you would think that we could land that one guy that would make the difference and be a true leader. It is getting ridiculous that the Blazer ship won't stay upright. If I were Paul Allen I'd be ticked that my money has been so poorly spent.

What has been consistent these past few years? Coach Cheeks has been here 3-is it him? Nah, Dunlevey had the same problems. Was it Sheed and Bonzi? Nah, they are gone and it continues. Was it Whittsit? Nope, "Patternash" has the same dilemma but only with a tighter wallet. Is it Damon? I don't think so since the same stuff happened when he was benched and it continues with NVE and Telfair.

I know all Blazer fans are grasping for answers. There is only so much that can be done.
1. change management 2. change coach 3. trade players.
Choose one or all but something has GOT to give and very soon. Of course, we could just ride this season out. Missing the playoffs really doesn't mean an awful lot when you end up bounced out in the first round. Still, even if this is what happens this season, major changes have to occur.

I suppose this is one of those phases a Blazer fan goes through when the team begins to show signs of an implosion. I'm not panicking. Blazer history tells me that a winning streak is forthcoming. Everyone will think we have turned the proverbial corner. Thing is, we keep going around the same block. It's frustrating, but I will still go to the games. I am still a fan. I will continue to support the Blazers. Thing is, the majority won't, and that is a big problem.

Maurice Cheeks Fined by NBA. *Updated*

"NEW YORK (AP) -- Portland Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks was fined $7,500 by the NBA on Monday for failing to leave the court in a timely manner after a loss to the Utah Jazz last week..."

This is lame in my opinion. I wonder just what a "timely manner" is? 10 seconds? 1 minute? It seems to me the refs were just ticked off and decided to dig up one of their well buried rules to slap Mo with since he had a few things to say about their less than perfect officiating. NBA rules, in MANY situations, are far too subjective.

Nick Van Exel calls out management-at least it looks like it to me!

"...This is an important road trip for us right now; this can really make or break the season right here," Van Exel said after the Blazers faded down the stretch and lost 100-89 at the Target Center. "We have five games left on this trip and it's important how we respond and what we do."

It's not just that the Blazers are 10-10 -- the fourth consecutive 10-10 start under coach Maurice Cheeks -- but Van Exel said the atmosphere surrounding this team has made what he called an "underachieving" start so precarious...

"It's so important right now, especially when this is a team that didn't make the playoffs last year," Van Exel said. "I mean, we are going through all this management stuff. You know, we got trades and there are guys (Shareef Abdur-Rahim) at the 'three' who are really a 'four', but they are playing him because they want to showcase him for a trade. . . . And he is one of the better players on the team. . . . I just think it's not the way we should be playing. It's tough, real tough when you go into a season like that when you are already out of balance...."
Source: OregonLive

I don't know if anyone can really disagree with Nick on this. Our team is terribly out of balance and it is a direct result of management. For years the Blazers have been stacked at some positions and understaffed at others. I agree with Nick, this is about it for the Blazers. If they do not return from the road with a winning record, there will HAVE to be changes made.

Black cat is good luck for Sonics.

"It may be time to edit the official book of bad luck symbols. The Sonics have always had a couple of cats living in the fenced-in parking lot at their practice facility, and this year a black one came by and took up residence.

After finishing eight games under .500 last season, the SuperSonics went into last weekend with the best record in the NBA."

I can't believe I am saying this, but perhaps it is time for one of your recipe's BlazerProphet! *gasp*

Portland Trailblazers vs Cleveland Cavaliers

"I hope [teams overlook my ability to make steals] so I can try to lead the league in steals," James said. "It's just instinct. I put myself in the right position to get that steal. I get a big one every game." Cleveland.com
Cleveland shouldn't look over the Blazer's ability to steal the ball either. Darius got 6 last night alone. I am sure Darius Miles will be amped for tonight's game. He played well last night but I can't shake this feeling that he was playing "wild". There seemed to be an air of chaos about him that made me nervous. I love the fact that he is making contributions but I would feel better if he calmed down and focused. He also needs to improve his free throw shooting since he will no doubt be sent to the line if he goes to the rim like he did last night in Minnesota. Damon will be facing Jeff McInnis tonight. Jeff has been playing very well. I am sure he too is looking forward to this reunion with an ex team. Whenever players face an old team, it can get interesting.

Keep an eye on LeBron and Darius, I expect to see a lot of thievery going on. The Blazers had better boost up the rebounding too. This is game 2 of a back to back so I am sure fatigue may be a factor, the bench is going to have to step up.

Portland Trailblazers vs Minnesota Timberwolves

This game is important. It will be a tough one. The T-Wolves are 13-7. However, against Chicago they shot only 36%. We could only be so lucky if they would repeat this! I wouldn't bet on it. The Wolves are probably the better team but I think the Blazers have a chance.

Zach will be inspired with KG on the floor, and if he remembers to pass the ball (as he has said he wants to do), anything can happen. As always, it hinges on the 3D's to make shots! Damon, DA and Darius have GOT to score. We know Ruben will be doing his part. I think the Blazers are going into this game with confidence. The Timberwolves are probably wanting to snap out of whatever it was that bit them when they played Chicago.

A win against the Wolves will be a good energizer to begin a 6 game road trip with! If we get this win, I wouldn't be suprised to see the Blazers go at least 4-2 on this trip. If anything is going to bring them down, it will be the schedule. Who came up with this one? 2 sets of back to backs with the second one having them fly from Atlanta to Detroit? Come on!
Game Preview

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: A loss. We had a fair shot at it. Missed free throws (Darius!!) and a great night for Wally pretty much did it for us. Overall not a bad game, I guess. It frustrates me when we have such an opportunity (12 steals) and end up losing. Is it just me or does Darius seem to be completely out of control out there? We might as well get over it. Bring on Cleveland.

Will the NCAA take over the hearts of NBA fans?

Start with an article by Jack McCallum at SI.com, where he begins with:
"Last week I spoke at a gathering that included about 75 boys' high school basketball players. Before I began I asked: How many of you like the NBA better than you like college basketball?
One youngster raised his hand.
One out of 75..."

and end with Duke's push to market college basketball where it is said that:
"...Between Ron Artest, the Pistons and Pacers, Kobe Bryant's unhappy summer, and Latrell Sprewell's lament that his contract wasn't sufficient to feed his family, not to mention the Olympic failure, the general deterioration of basic basketball skills, and the increasing reliance on petulant teenagers, the NBA is as vulnerable as it has been since about 1980..."
Add to this an article from the Portland Tribune by Kerry Eggers that reveals the thoughts of Steve Johnson and you definitely have some food for thought. After watching the infamous "brawl", Steve had this to say:
“As I watched that brawl over and over, I couldn’t help but believe that for me, this was kind of like the end,” he says. “What happened in that game was the result of things that are going on in our sport at its foundation. There is nothing pure anymore. And the result is that you get people who are playing, from the youngest ages, for all the wrong reasons. “They’re not playing for the competition. They’re not playing to be the best. They’re not playing for their teammates. They’re not playing to win. They’re playing because they want the lifestyle it can bring. The cars. The jewelry. The attention. We’ve created this situation, and I’m not sure how we get out of it.” (thanks ABM)

Boy, it pains me to think that the Portland Trailblazers played a role in this fall from grace. I know they did. However, I am proud to say that the Blazers have made great strides in cleaning up their act. Unfortunately, others have come in to take their place. I like college basketball, but I love the NBA. I hope that Stern and other teams take notice and follow the Blazer's lead in making changes that will bring the NBA back to the glory it once knew.

The end of the black hole?

"...This has been a delicate subject for the Blazers for the greater part of the past two seasons as Randolph has emerged as the team's go-to player and unquestioned star. Nobody on the team doubts Randolph's talent or work ethic, but his motives and knowledge of the game have at times rankled the veteran players. Privately, they have said Randolph never will be on a winning team as long as he continues to focus more on his statistics than what is good for the team...

...The point is not to take away from Randolph's scoring opportunities. The Blazers' offense is designed for, and run through, Randolph, who is averaging 21.5 points and 10.8 rebounds. The point is to involve more players and create more flow by eliminating the black hole that develops when Randolph touches the ball..."

This is a very good thing! All I hear during games is "pass the ball Zach" or "oh no, the black hole". Fans are aware of this problem. Zach causes the Blazers to miss scoring opportunities when he tries to create a shot that simply isn't there. His determination to score blinds him to the fact that there are open guys waiting for the ball! I am glad that this topic is now open for discussion and more importantly, Zach is responding positively. I can't wait to watch the next game! This one small change could change everything for the Blazers.

"I'm trying," said Randolph, who is averaging 17.8 shots a game. "If this is what it takes for us to win, that's what I have to do. I need to get the guys involved early and look to pass more. It's something I can get better at." Source Link: OregonLive.com

It's not a rumor, Vince Carter is going to be a dad.

TORONTO (CP) - Vince Carter is going to be a dad.
The Toronto Raptors star guard/forward and wife Ellen Rucker are expecting their first child, Carter's spokesperson Jeff Scott confirmed Monday. The baby is due in early June. Carter and Rucker, a chiropractor and his college sweetheart at North Carolina, were married July 3 in Palm Beach, Fla...."

Sportsnet.com

There have been so many Vince Carter Blazer rumors flying around it only seems fitting to report that he is going to be a daddy. He's practically "family".

Steve Smith? Wesley Person?

Should we consider bringing either of these guys back? Smith and Person were both helpful at one time. December 15 is just a few days away. I know that signing anyone will mean the immediate dismissal of Geno Carlisle (a player I truly think we have not explored enough). I wish rosters were bigger! My guess is Wesley would be the first choice.

"...Everything changes Wednesday. That's when nearly half the league becomes trade-eligible.Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, those who sign new contracts cannot be dealt for at least three months or before Dec. 15, whichever comes later...

...Among those names could be forward Wesley Person, who has had diminished value for the Heat in recent games, but could attract interest from shooting-challenged teams. Ditto for Charlotte guard Steve Smith, who has shown enough this season for the Bobcats to attract potential interest from a contender..."

Ha Seung Jin

Sunday's Oregonian featured a nice story on Ha Seung Jin. According to Nash, if there was room, he'd be a Blazer now. I think he should wait. Unfortunately the severe lack of Reign reporting is causing this young man to fly under the radar. He's a future talent and a person of interest. I encourage you to read this story.

"He was a little further advanced than what we had expected," Nash said. "If we had a roster spot, we would have signed him then." LINK

Super Season Ticket Holder

My friend was the Super Season Ticket Holder last night at the Utah game. She is going to have my head for posting these pictures but it just has to be done.

Sue has sat in front of me for six years and we have become friends. She is practically family. The games just wouldn't be the same without her there. When she isn't there, it is downright BORING! She is an enthusiastic fan and is someone that seems to know everyone in our section! I don't know how she does it. Sue named Arvydas Sabonis as her lifetime Blazer favorite and Ruben Patterson as her current favorite. She loves Ruben's energy and willingness to give it his all every time he is on the floor. I concur.

PS: If you were at the game and saw the sign behind Sue's head that said "NO KIDD - PLAY GENO", that was me!

Care to guess who those sigs belong to? We could barely make out any of them!It looks like a bunch of scribble!

Illini roasts the Ducks.

This post is for a special friend that keeps quacking at me about the Ducks. Now, I realize that I live in Duck country but the Illini are near and dear to my heart. I grew up in their back yard. You can take the girl out of Illinois but you can't take the Illinois out of the girl! If you've noticed I did give up by Chicago Bulls for the Portland Trailblazers. Of course, this was pretty much forced upon me by Jerry Krause. Let's not go there and stick to the topic at hand!

Illinois is on one heck of a roll. They are marching along undefeated and beating their opponents handedly having all of their wins in double digits. Their shooting percentage is incredible, with this game being at 58%. The Fighting Illini are making everything look easy. They are having fun and they are holding on to that number 1 spot. The Illini are looking like champions.

Portland Trailblazers vs Utah Jazz

This is being posted just for the record.

Great game. There were moments of flare and lots of energy. Ruben took a nasty fall but he popped right back up. He may be feeling it now! This was a good win for the Blazers to get before heading out on a 6 game road trip. How about that shot by Pryzbilla! DUDE!

Portland Trailblazers vs Utah Jazz

Tonight is the second of a back to back for Portland. Last night they got an emotional win over the Celtics, shortly after they flew off to Utah. The guys will be tired but a win like last night can erase a lot of fatigue.

The Utah Jazz are facing their longest losing streak since the 99-00 season and surely see tonight's game as a possible win. I am sure the Blazers are looking to tonight to extend their good fortune from last night. With Andrei Kirilenko out, I am giving the edge to Portland. The Jazz and Trailblazers will face off again Sunday night n Portland.

UPDATE: We got robbed on this one! The shot by Damon to send the game into OT was awsome! The refs were questionable in this one!

An inside look at "Bassy"

Today's Portland Tribune has a great piece on "seabass", "bassy", or simply "Telfair". Whatever you call him, this young man has created quite a stir in Portland. This is a must read today.

"...Telfair — his friends call him “Bassy” — seems to have already made a connection with Portland’s fans. The native New Yorker has quickly become the people’s choice at Blazer games. Can it be that, six weeks into his NBA career, he is a fan favorite in Portland? “I think so,” he says with a chuckle. “I don’t know why — yet. I am the new kid on the block, I guess. Sort of like a new toy.”

We've hooked ourselves a keeper in Sebastian Telfair. He's got the character, talent and pizzaz we sorely need. Meet the future of the Portland Trailblazers. LINK (Portland Tribune)

Blazer's Holiday Express.

The Blazer's Holiday Express got off to a start yesterday at the Rose Garden.

"This is fun, I love being around the kids when they pick out a tree. The whole team is out here today and it's great that the organization makes a committment to the community like this," said Ratliff. "I wish I'd been a boy scout though, I could tie these trees on top of cars better if I knew those fancy knots they teach you," he said.

Portland Trailblazers vs Boston Celtics

Well, tonight will surely be a test. Our last meeting with Boston was pretty ugly even though we nearly won. Gary Payton and his mouth will be here along with Paul Pierce. Both teams are coming off of back to back losses. It has gotten to the point where I do not see being at home as an advantage for Portland. The empty seats are hard to ignore and being booed by the crowd sure doesn't help. According to Cheeks earlier this week there will be no change made to the starting line up. Of course, this could change come game time. This is a test of will. It is going to take mental strength to get a win tonight. The Blazers have been bombarded with trade talk and wounded with 2 brutal defeats. They will have to dig deep for this one. We'll see.
game preview (NBA.com)

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: Wow! What a sloppy sloppy game! But my oh my WHAT A FINISH! The crowd went crazy when Reef swooshed that 3, so did the team. It was a much needed win, it was an emotional win. The team and the fans needed the lift.

Damon struggled all night, hitting only 2 free throws. It has been reported by our "pals" at the Oregonian that Damon drew "sarcastic applause" as he hit the 2 free throws. That is very wrong. The applause I heard and the applause I gave was that of encouragement. Yes, Telfair got good minutes and showed great potential. No doubt he is the future PG. However, he is not the PRESENT PG. Damon still has that job and people need to remember that. Damon was a gentleman and a professional as he spoke highly of Sebastian after the game. People (and reporters) need to get off Damon's back. Damon may have been shooting badly but he did get 7 assists to Telfair's 3.

Darius was hurt on the last play and is listed as doubtful for tonight's game in Utah. It sounds like it is a bruised heel. He went down after he inbounded the ball for Reef's phenominal game winning shot. I am hopeful this gives the Blazer's good momentum for their upcoming 6 game road trip.

Abdur-Rahim’s Buzzer-Beater Powers Blazers (NBA.COM)

If it weren't for bad luck, we'd have no luck at all!

I swear, when it comes to the Portland Trailblazers, try as we might, things just have a way of going south. Yesterday, Jason Kidd basically said that there is no way he will be a Blazer (which is not bad luck in my opinion, but still...), and last night Vince Carter strains his achilles tendon.

As you all know I want nothing to do with Jason Kidd but his words only add to the stigma that being a Blazer is a bad thing. Will Nash still go after a player that publically scorned a team that Nash himself has worked hard to change public perception of? I would think Nash is wiser than that.

If Vince is OK, there still may be a deal with Toronto, but I have a feeling that all trades are now on hold until the New Year.

Cheeks needs to really consider his line up. I can understand not changing immediately after a blowout but he needs to do it sooner than later. I guess this is just one of those "bummer" Blazer days.

In addition to this I have been told that Nick Van Exel has been hurt in practice but haven't seen a link yet.

Music to my ears!

"Jason Kidd still prefers a trade to staying with the New Jersey Nets, but if the Nets trade him to Portland, the All-Star guard will not report to the Trail Blazers, a source close to Kidd told ESPN.com..."

The real Jason Kidd has now stood up. Can we please move on and either get Carter or bag the whole trade idea and go with what we have? Personally, I'm hoping the Carter trade goes through.

Orange juice anybody? Big Orange gets squeeeeezed by little orange.

Oh man. I am in heaven! The OK Cowboys beat Syracuse 74-60. The cowboys are on a roll and looking good. A 17-4 run in the 2nd half, lead by John Lucas, sealed the deal.

If we want a 3pt shooter, perhaps we should look to the Reign.

Today while I was fishing for Reign information I noticed that we have 3 guys that seem to be shooting lights out from 3 point range. While the Reign have only played 5 games, look at these shots made:
Robert Day 17
Charles McKinney 13
Shawn Myrick 9
STATS

If the Blazers are desperate for scoring, and wish to not make a trade or spend any money, maybe they should give these guys a look. They are right in our back yard.

Just SAY NO to Jason Kidd!

I hope that John Nash pays more attention to John Lucas, than he does any considerations of bringing Jason Kidd to Portland while scouting the Jimmy V classic tonight.

Blazers general manager John Nash and New Jersey Nets general manager Ed Stefanski -- longtime friends from their days in Philadelphia -- will take the hourlong train ride together, ostensibly as a scouting foray from today's Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden to the Temple-Pennsylvania game Wednesday in Philadelphia.

But somewhere along the line, the conversation undoubtedly will turn to the health and tradability of Jason Kidd, the Nets' All-Star point guard. Last week, Nash said that monitoring Kidd's recovery from knee surgery is on his to-do list this week. OregonLive

It makes no sense to bring Jason Kidd to Portland for 80 mil (5 years) when we can have Carter and Rose for less (around 76 mil) and only be locked in for 3 years!

Kidd's character alone is a step in the wrong direction for Portland, especially when "good character" has become the Blazer organization's mantra. It is ridiculous. Add to this the odds against Jason ever being the player he WAS (think Chris Webber), and you have the makings of a really bad deal. This Blazer fan says NO to Jason Kidd.

OSU Cowboys devour Washington Cougars, take on Syracuse.

Hey y'all, what is with college basketball in the northwest lately? First the Illini whoop on the Zags and now the OSU Cowboys devoured the Cougs.

Like the Illini, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are undefeated. Saturday night OSU beat WSU 81-29! This is not a typo. Is it the orange? *Don't forget* December 11 on ESPN. Illinois versus Oregon.

Ruben Patterson has done the "seemingly" impossible.

Ruben is actually winning the hearts and pens of Portland media! Not long ago he was praised by KATU. In today's Portland Tribune, Ruben is being praised by Dwight James. A man who commonly rips the Blazer players apart.
This is a big deal. It is shining proof that Ruben is a keeper. If Nash trades him now he will most certainly be run through the Portland media meat grinder.
*Take note that DJ still manages to get a dig in at Maurice Cheeks:

"If you think the Trail Blazers play better with Ruben Patterson on the court, I know two things about you:1. You’ve been paying close attention to the team’s first 14 games.2. You probably aren’t coaching the team. One way to examine a player’s impact is to study how his team does when he is on the floor. Does his team outscore its opponents? It’s a device called plus-minus that hockey has used for years, and it’s been around for a long time in basketball, too. The difference these days is that you don’t have to haul out all those play-by-play sheets and figure those points by hand.At its best, the Internet is a wonderful thing. A Web site, 82games.com, does all the math for you. It gives you a clear picture of whose presence on the floor means the most to a team.

And Patterson has been the guy. In fact, for a man averaging just 5.6 points through the first 14 games, he’s been a monster. It was on display, in fact, Tuesday night when his defensive intensity propelled Portland past Seattle. When Patterson has been on the floor, the Blazers have outscored their opponents by 40 points. That equates to 7.5 points per game if he played 48 minutes — which he’s quite obviously not going to do. And you have to consider that he’s sometimes playing against other team’s reserves..."

Odds for Portland getting Jason Kidd

According to the New York Daily News, Minnesota is the front runner to get Jason Kidd with odds of 5-1.

Portland's odds are 12-1. I do NOT want Jason Kidd as a Blazer. He is a bad character guy. He has a bum knee and a whiny attention starved wife. In addition, his contract is obnoxious and he simply isn't worth it.

"Portland (12-1) Comment: Blazers want Kidd more than Kidd wants Portland."
(New York Daily News)

*note to Gar* Jason's wife has been a major thorn for the Nets, and yes, Jason's contract is OBNOXIOUS! ;) This would be a terrible situation for the Blazers to put themselves in. Carter and Rose are a much more valuable choice for Portland.

Portland Trailblazers vs. Phoenix Suns

Back to back. The guys played a disapointing game last night in Seattle. Phoenix is playing very well. Shawn Marion, Amare Stoudemire, and Steve Nash have made the Suns a legitimate threat. Marion grabbed a seson high 18 rebounds against Minnesota on Friday night and Stoudemire scored 28. They had been on a 9 game winning streak when they lost to Minny by 4.

The Blazers need to pay attention. They are going to be tired, but hopefully they will take their frustrations from last night out on Phoenix. I can't help but wonder if trade rumors are beginning to take a toll on our guys. DA and Damon have GOT to score. Both of them have been mentioned in possible trades with Toronto. I have a feeling if they don't get their numbers up, we may see big changes very soon.

We don't need no stinking game preview. We know the stakes. We know we can win. It's time to PLAY BALL! Bring it on!

GO BLAZERS! Stick it to Seattle!

If you really want to see a game preview, here you go. (NBA.com)

UPDATE: OK, I am disappointed but after looking at the box score, I really don't think it's so bad. All teams go cold. It is terrible when they all go cold at once. Damon and DA certainly could have shot better. Zach's shots just wouldn't drop. Seattle was on, we were off. We need to remember that this is the very same team that beat Seattle last Tuesday. They have been off for 4 days. This game was only a 10 point game and we kept Seattle under 100 again. There are some good things to take from this game. Unfortunately, we didn't get a win out of it. I'm not gonna go off and demand a trade but it is also no secret that our outside shooting does need to be more consistent.

PLAY CARLISLE!

Richie Frahm is reportedly going to be out another two weeks. OregonLive/Jason Quick

In the mean time, I have but one plea to Coach Cheeks:
PLAY GENO CARLISLE!
Geno is a shooter and a role player. He has been patient and after all the years of waiting, he deserves a try on the floor! Let's see what he can do! If he is as good as I hear he is, we may be foolish to let him go. If he is, waive Q and sign Geno!

Darius Miles Sees the Light.

Last year when the Blazers acquired Darius Miles there was a lot of fresh excitement surging through the fans. Paul Allen himself was reduced to a giddy teenager at the thought of Darius being a Blazer. Darius did bring excitement back to the Rose Garden but the pains from previous Blazer problems still cast a shadow over the team and the fans. There was much work to do. FLASHBACK(Hoopsworld)

Everyone knows that the Portland Trailblazers have struggled the past few years for various reasons and that last year they didn't make the playoffs for the first time in many many years. The franchise has been at an all time low. The trading of Bonzi Wells and Rasheed Wallace last season is a moment that we all can look back at as the point where the Blazers made an about face and began heading in a new direction. As a fan it has been painful and I am well aware that there will be more changes to come. I dread that because as a fan you get attached to the players and hate to see them go-at least I do.

What I enjoy the most is seeing players like Darius Miles mature and learn what it takes to be a team player. Accepting new and different roles seems to be something that is part of being a Blazer. Often players are asked to play out of position or accept less minutes, mostly due to us always being logjammed at certain positions. Shareef Abdur Rahim is a prime example of this. Through it all Reef has been a trooper. Since the season started, Darius has clearly taken issue with the fact that he is being made to come off the bench and not start. In addition, his minutes have been reduced. When Darius would take to the floor he would try to be the scorer that he thought he should be. The result was a flood of missed shots and missed dunks, probably from trying too hard.

Now Darius is viewing his role through "Ruben Patterson eyes". Ruben has established himself as a dependable, solid role player. Because of this Ruben has become a fan favorite. He has always been happy to come off the bench and go out there and do "all the little things" that help a team win. However mysterious these "little things" may be to some people, they are neccessary for success. I believe that Ruben has now helped Darius see that he too can be this type of player. The things that Darius will learn by being a role player will help his game in the future. The day Darius Miles starts again will be a day that we should see a very well rounded player, that will no doubt be the star that he has always been pegged to be. Keep it up D!

My hope is that this philosophy continues to spread throughout the team. The Blazers are on a good run right now and with players accepting their roles, we may be looking at a much better season than we anticipated!
OregonLive: Coming to terms with role.

J-Mac Attack

"...For McInnis, who turned 30 during training camp, this is, by far, the most important season of his career. Now in his seventh year in the league and in his prime, he certainly sees the need to maximize his value when he becomes a free agent this summer, Thus far, he's rising to that challenge, putting together the best basketball of his career during the first 15 games of the season. After a sizzling 26-point performance Wednesday night against the Phoenix Suns, the most points he's scored as a Cavalier, McInnis started Thursday's game with the Denver Nuggets averaging 15.8 points per game. It is the highest average of his career.

After tying a career high in 3-pointers by making 6-of-9 of them Wednesday, McInnis is shooting 44.4 percent from behind the arc, also way above his career average of 34.2 percent. Though his assists are down, primarily because he splits time at point guard and shooting guard with Eric Snow now in the fold, his shooting and scoring have been vital to the Cavaliers' solid start to the season...

Armed with a new agent, Steve Kauffman, if McInnis continues his strong play, he'll probably start the bidding near the six-year, $37 million deals fellow point guards Derek Fisher (Golden State), Troy Hudson (Minnesota) and Rafer Alston (Toronto) got last summer..." BeaconJournal

Jeff has managed to land in a pretty nice position, playing the point for LeBron James. LeBron has been very complimentary of Jeff. With James on the floor, the rest of the team is "invisible". Although, as with Jordan and Pippen, one doesn't exist without the other. I'm not saying that LeBron wouldn't be LeBron without Jeff, but you have to admit, it isn't a bad gig! It seems J-Mac is doing a great job thus far. I think a veteran guard like Jeff is perfect for a rising phenom like LeBron. I'd say it is a "dream job" for a PG. I hope he gets to keep his job. Best of luck to you Jeff!

Ruben Patterson Providing What the Blazers Have Needed All Along

"...Just go out there and play hard, you guys know that. I'm going to continue doing it, you know, just going out on the floor and help my teammates do whatever we have to do to win....

..."Now a lot of people in the crowd are yelling his name so it's a hard substitution, because he's a guy who plays with a ton of energy and when he steps out on the floor he always gives us something,” Cheeks said. ...

...The score book showed seven points and three steals, but it can't show what those who admire his play have grown to appreciate..." Source Link: KATU.com

Ruben is quickly becoming my favorite player. The Blazer brass and Blazer fans have been craving energy, effort, and good character. Ruben has given us all of this and more. He has NEVER lacked in the energy department, and rarely on the effort. Some people throw Ruben's past into his face and use it as an excuse to belittle him or say he needs to be traded. I do not agree. Unlike many players in the league that have off court problems (that often become on court problems), Ruben has had the courage to stand up, face facts, and make changes. I love his effort and applaud his willingness to face the hard stuff in life.

Ruben's enthusiasm and determination is infectious. His presence on this team is vital to our success.
Keep up the fantastic work Rube!

UPDATE: CARTER TRADE, Nash says "they aren't as interested as we are"

According to the Blazer Blog and other message boards, the Toronto Raptors have placed a trade on the table:

Vince Carter and Jalen Rose for Shareef Abdur Rahim and Derek Anderson. The Blazer Blog also says that a third Blazer would have to be added to make it work.

I say DO IT! I have grown to really like SAR but it is no secret he is going to have to go. DA is too sporadic and injury prone. I like DA, but VC and Jalen will help this team and help them now. It's a bit of a spendy trade for Portland but there are other things to consider than contracts. Patterson and Nash need to put butts in seats and VC can do that. I think Vince could flourish here.

Source Link: Blazer Blog

UPDATE: ESPN has picked it up. Blazer #3 is Vladimir Stepania.
(I like Vlade but to get VC and JR-I'd have to say yes).

"...The Raptors and Trail Blazers are discussing a blockbuster seven-player trade that would send Carter to Portland, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith has learned..." ESPN
UPDATE: It could happen! Well ok, Vince would have to talk to Larry Steele about it! Steve Largent let Jerry Rice resurrect #80, maybe Larry would let VC use 15.

11/19 UPDATE: Story from Toronto Sun.

11/22 UPDATE: Vince Carter says, "I don't want to dunk anymore," Sportsnet.com I still think coming to Portland will breathe new life into VC. I haven't heard any new news other than rumors of other teams making other offers. (source Toronto Sun)

12/2 UPDATE: According to the Portland Tribune and the Toronto Sun, Nash has confirmed that the teams have been talking. Nash also says that Toronto isn't as interested as we are in doing a deal. Personally, I 'd still love to get Vince Carter but Shareef has been playing outstanding. Still, if Nash plans to trade SAR regardless, then this is the trade I say we do. NOT JASON KIDD! FORGET IT!

12/3 UPDATE: According to Peter Vescey a deal is very possible and at any time, as long as it includes Jalen Rose: "...Again, the Raptors insist Rose be included. From what I'm told, the Blazers are seriously thinking about it, to the point of scouting Carter scrupulously against the Heat and the Magic. Sources say Babcock was asked a few days ago if he'd accept Derek Anderson's 3-year ($8.4M/$9M/$9.7M) pact along with Shareef ($14.6M) and Van Exel ($11.9M; next year's $12.8M isn't guaranteed) or Stoudamire ($12.5M) as part of the package..." NEWYORKPOST.com More @ Hoopshype.

12/09 UPDATE: Hold the phone, Vince Carter is injured. This along with SAR's outstanding play may finally put this one to rest.
