Darius Miles Blaming Zach Randolph For His Poor Play?

"..."Shaq," Miles said while nodding profoundly, "is creating a monster in Dwyane Wade." Except Miles used a rather colorful adjective before Dwyane's first name. Miles was of the opinion that Shaq is intent on proving that he can single-handedly make Wade better than Kobe, thereby proving to the world who was really behind those L.A. titles. Miles also added that his Trail Blazers teammate Zach Randolph, who happened to be sitting a few feet from him, will turn into a true star only once he, like Shaq, makes his teammates better by passing out of double teams. Which teammates should he pass to in particular? Well, Miles, of course..." Sports Illustrated.com

Escuse me Mr. Miles? I'd say you might want to consider your recent attempts at fanciful dunking and consider putting two hands on the ball and putting it in the basket!

Oakland Tribune takes a stab at Maurice Cheeks

"...The Trail Blazers have every bit as much talent as the Suns and SuperSonics, yet they'd be on the outside looking in if the playoffs started today. Why? Because coach Maurice Cheeks, who'll be lucky to last the season, insists upon stressing defense rather than allowing his thoroughbreds to run..."
Oakland Tribune

Unfortunately, this is beginning to be what Blazer fans are thinking too.

Also in this article is a thought on how the new "Piston's Rule" will affect play. It is going to be hard to defend anyone if you can't touch anyone. I think I will take a wait and see approach to this one. Yeah, it is great for players to be able to get to the rim but if they go uncontested-what fun is that? I happen to think that defense is a big part of the game. The thoroughbreds can run on offense alright, especially if there is nothing stopping them. I'm not saying a guy should have his feet knocked out from under him, but come on, you need to be able to defend.

"...The NBA, through its officials, is working hard to promote athleticism in its product. Most of the exciting action in the game -- especially the dunking and shot-blocking -- is done in the vicinity of the rim, but offensive players have had a tough time getting there in recent years because of the New England Patriots-type chucking that was being permitted on the perimeter..."

Detroit Pistons & Indiana Pacers: The Fight *Updated as the saga unfolds*

If you haven't heard about or seen the fight in Detroit then you are simply not paying attention.

I really don't want to go through a whole analysis of this but will post a few thoughts after watching several replays and then staying up til 2AM watching a replay of the game.

1. The refs began losing control of this game in the very first quarter.
2. Ben Wallace and Ron Artest should have been ejected immediately.
3. Fans should be charged with assault as well as Artest, Jackson, O'Neal.

My opinion is that this whole mess was started by the one fan that tossed their drink at Ron Artest. It could have been avoided by better handling by the refs of the earlier situations. The fan crossed the line and that person needs to be held accountable. All others should be held accountable for their actions once the fight started. Ben's push should be handled as a simple flagrant and no more.

IDIOTS-absolute IDIOTS! Detroit needs to take action with their "fans". Everytime I see that moron pouring his drink on Jermaine I want to scream. This is followed up by a girl tossing her bottle at him. It is ridiculous and I don't blame players for being so mad that they can no longer hold it in. Those "people" can not be allowed to get away with it.

Here is a link to videos and reports of the incident. ESPN.COM

I'm just too ticked off to continue with this. One special note though, RASHEED WALLACE was a PEACEMAKER tonight, and for that, I applaud him.

Blazers versus Seattle Supersonics: THE I-5 RIVALRY!

Today is one of the games that many Blazer and Sonic fans look forward to. It is war. Normally the Blazers have the edge, however, the Sonics are having a great season so far. In fact, they are currently number 1 in the league (13-2). The Blazers are struggling and sitting at one game over .500 (7-6). The Sonics have lost 4 straight at the Rose Garden but this meeting is coming at a time when the Sonics are sizzling and the Blazers are fizzling.

HOWEVER, this is why basketball is such a great game. Anybody can win at any time. The Blazers will be at home and are feeling confident after a good road trip and a win over New Jersey. The Sonics have won their last 4 and often lose their footing in Portland-regardless of records. The fact that more "pride" rides on these "rivalry" type games tends to bring out the competitor in all the players. I look for a feisty game with loud fans. I am going to give the edge to Portland since they are home and I think they will want this win more than Seattle. I think the Blazers will pull off the win and send the Sonics back to Seattle shaking their heads in disbelief. The Sonics and Blazers will be facing off again next Saturday. Tonight's results will certainly have it's affects on that game!

UPDATE:

A picture is worth a thousand words. More tomorrow. I am tired from YELLING! What a fantastic game! Posted by Hello

The Blazers played a very well rounded game to night, holding Ray Allen to 21 points (with 10 coming from free throws). They brought out the beast in Danny Fortsen who ended up being ejected with 2 flagrant fouls. Shareef was fantastic on a night Zach just couldn't get it going, although he hit what could be considered the game winning shot in the 4th qtr. 25 from SAR. Darius picked up the pace adding 20 (using two hands at the rim I might add). Ruben Patterson did it again. His energy is a joy to watch. You really have to watch Ruben to appreciate his contributions. Way to fight back guys! The Blazers were down 13 to the 13-2 Sonics. They didn't give up and they got the win. Well deserved! By the way, OUR BENCH ROCKED LAST NIGHT!
*of note* Everytime the Blazers get a big win over a top team it goes without mention. A blurb here, a blurb there. I watched ESPN when I got home and their report was showing the Sonic shooting and then saying "by the way, the Blazers won". Phooey on that!

Michael Jordan's brother headed for Iraq.

"...He has asked to stay in the Army for a year beyond his mandatory retirement date so he can complete a yearlong deployment to Iraq with the 35th Signal Brigade..."

It isn't that James Jordan is going to Iraq that makes this an interesting story to me. It is the similarity beween MJ's dedication to the game of basketball and JJ's dedication to his work that caught my eye.

Blazers vs. Dallas Mavericks

The day after Thanksgiving and an early start. It will be a bit hard for both teams.

Dirk has been hurt, but don't expect that to really matter.

As the last few games have shown, if the guards make shots, we have a great chance to win.

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: Oh yuck. This game was winnable for the Blazers. They had several chances. Dallas rebounding beat us, which is odd since the Blazers a by far the better RB team. Perhaps it was asking to much for an 3-0 road trip. I wish we could have gotten this one but hey, they made it a game. 2-1 will have to do.

Hubie Brown Resigns

"...Memphis, Tennessee, November 25, 2004 -- Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced that after a successful 33-year basketball coaching career, Grizzlies Head Coach Hubie Brown is retiring. Grizzlies Assistant Coach Lionel Hollins has been named the team’s interim head coach.

“Unexpected health-related issues will not allow me to continue coaching the Memphis Grizzlies,” said Hubie Brown. “This situation was unforeseen and absolutely non-existent at the beginning of the season...."

This is terrible news. Hubie is the best. I hope he is able to get his health under control. Best wishes Mr. Brown.

*I got curious* Luke Jackson (Cavs) and Luke Ridenour (Sonics)will face off for the first time on January 15th in Seattle. If the game allows, I hope the coaches are "tuned in" enough to let them be on the floor together!

Blazers vs Orlando Magic

The Blazers are coming off a fantastic win. I don't think this being a back to back game will matter. I am sure there will be plenty of adrenalin left over to carry them through. I am expecting a win tonight based simply on this.

I know Grant Hill is having a magical come back season so far, and that Francis and "Turkey Glue" (ok ok-so I have turkey on the brain) Turkoglu...although these guys are playing well, I think the Blazers are playing better. I think the Blazers are primed for another win.

Stick to the game plan guys and make your shots!

UPDATE: WOW! Can I say it again? WOW! This is the Blazer team I love. Teamwork. That is all it has taken. Opening the floor up for the guards has really sparked this tem and I hope it continues. Damon with 16, Miles with 10, and RUBEN's 7-7 & THREE steals got this one done. This and the expected great play of Zach and SAR. I can't say enough about Ruben. Nash better not even have a thought about trading Patterson. I believe he is the root of our success-Rube and shots going in that is. I just think Ruben gives us more shot opportunities than we would have without him. Great game guys!

"...As most of you are aware, fan voting for the 2005 NBA All-Star team has begun. We at the Trail Blazers are very excited to have four of our team members on the ballot. We're very proud of Zach Randolph, Theo Ratliff, Derek Anderson and Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

As you know, Zach was the NBA's most improved player last year and Theo Ratliff is a league leader in blocked shots. With Derek and Shareef, we have true veteran leaders full of talent and drive. We hope that the effort they show every night on the court makes them a crowd favorite and that Trail Blazers fans around the world will vote as often as they can to help them secure their spot on the team.

We'd love to have our team represented at this year's NBA All-Star Game in Denver on February 20, 2005. So be sure to vote for your favorite players today!"

Blazers vs. Miami Heat

What is there to say? If the Blazers win this game it will be a miracle. We have lost 5 of our last 7 games. We are weak in the middle and I expect Theo and Pryzbilla to have foul trouble going up against Shaq. Zach may have to serve duty at center as well.

Damon's shooting has improved dramatically, averaging 19.5 pts a game since Mo told him to "play your game". This is great but we also need DA, Darius, NVE to play their game! We will likely be forced to rely on outside shooting because of Shaq. I do not feel that confident. This is where Vince Carter could help us greatly!

If the guards are making shots, we will have a chance. If not, Zach and SAR can not do it alone. Hopefully Shaq will shoot free throws as well as we all know he does ;)

This will be Eddie Jone's 700th career game.

UPDATE: The guards made shots. Result? Blazers win. DA with 19 and NVE (good to see him hit a few) with 15. Damon got 8, Darius with 9. Not bad at all.

John Stockton's #12 Retired

John Stockton is quite possibly the best point guard, and person, to ever play in the NBA. What an outstanding career. It is simply a shame he never got a ring! I really wish the NBA would consider creating a "Life Time Achievement" ring for players such as John.

"...Legendary UCLA coach John Wooden said Stockton was the one player in the league he would pay to watch. NBA hall-of-fame coach Jack Ramsey called him the ultimate team player and the best point guard ever in the halfcourt. High praise from two of the game’s high priests, but anyone who understands the sport knows that Stockton rightly deserves a spot in basketball lore.

John never reached his goal of winning an NBA championship, despite reaching the Finals twice. But one must never make the mistake of insinuating that he was not a champion. A champion plays with the heart of a warrior and never gives up the pursuit of his worthy goals. He may not have a ring, but Stockton serves as a model of consistency and determination that was never swayed or shaken..."

Blazers vs. Houston Rockets

My computer crashed and I have no access from my house. I am posting this just to keep it for the record.

The Blazers lost the game. We really need work and Cheek's questionable coaching is again on my mind. I will never understand why he took Ruben out of the game after he had gotten a steal and a dunk. It completely deflated a potential run by Portland.

It was Clyde Drexler night. He was honored for being inducted into the hall of fame. I do not want us to honor him anymore-each time we have, we have lost!

Blazers vs. Milwaukee Bucks

This game could literally go either way. The Bucks (3-3) have been struggling right along with Portland (4-3). The Blazers will be at home and that SHOULD be an advantage. Terry Porter will be there, he always gets a rounding applause.

Personally I am concerned how the current trade rumors may affect the team. It is really hard to guage. We are coming off a horrendous loss to Memphis. Trade winds are blowing. All the uncertainty, lack of confidence, could spell trouble. The Blazers have commonly approached what seems to be a doomed situation with suprising tenacity and they win emphatically. I am hoping this is the result tonight.

I also am expecting fans to make their opinions about the Vince Carter trade known. I'll have camera in hand and will share any shots I get.

Game Preview (NBA.com)

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: The Blazers got the win. The story of the night was Damon Stoudamire and Ruben Patterson. Damon went off for 33 points and 6 assists. Ruben got 11 points and 2 assists. As always, what Ruben does isn't easily revealed on paper. We can not afford to lose Ruben Patterson!

Cheeks tried a new strategy last night. The basic idea is to not force the guards to always be looking to give the ball to Zach but to create their own shots and take them. I don't know about the long run but for now it may be a good idea. Why? Zach responded by getting 5 assists. That means Zach PASSED THE BALL. This is a skill that Zach needs to add to his game. He still ended up with 18 rebounds and 22 points in the end. Zach wants to improve his game, this may force him to.

Shareef and DA, who have been the center of trade talks, responded with 17 and 14 respectively. Of note is the fact that Reef had ZERO assists.

I am now convinced that Darius needs Ruben. Darius's game picked up last night. 8-3-10. This is a stat line that is a result of Ruben Patterson.

It was a good game. The small crowd was involved. Still, the trade rumors were present. Will this be the last time we see SAR and DA in Blazer unis? We will see. By the way, I didn't see one sign about a trade-I really thought I would.

Ben Wallace is back.

Now that Ben has returned to the team, the Pistons will likely find a rhythm very quickly. Already the mood in the locker room is light. Last night Sheed and Ben had this fun exchange:

"...Wallace was watching ESPN, and Greg Anthony was lauding the return of Wallace in the Pistons' 93-85 victory Wednesday. (over Minnesota)

"You hear that, Easy?" Ben said to backup center Elden Campbell, who made Minnesota's Eddie Griffin look bad on a baseline dunk. "Somebody ought to take me out to dinner."

Rasheed Wallace got his zinger, saying, "Yeah, but Ron Artest is a better defensive player."
Not missing a beat, Ben said: "When he ain't rapping."..."

Geno Carlisle: A Must Read

I am rooting for Geno Carlisle to make the team and get a contract. He is precisely the sort of player I want as a Blazer.

If it takes waiving Qyntel Woods to give Geno his dream, so be it. Q has had his chances. The way Q has squandered his NBA opportunities really upsets me when I read about what Geno has been through. Why not sign a solid dependable player instead?

This story is so good that there is nothing I wanted to take out of context.

Will Phil Jackson Coach Again?

My bet is yes. The man can not stay away from it. Today's Denver Post says that Phil Jackson's "people" have contacted a "handful"of NBA teams. The only one named is the Denver Nuggets.
There have been plenty of rumors saying that Jeff Bzdelik may be on the outs. Kiki Vandeweghe says it isn't going to happen.

I wonder if Portland is part of that "handful"? I wouldn't be entirely against this. It would no doubt be a dandy PR move. One thing is for certain, it would give Phil a chance to prove he can coach without a star! Hmmmm

Q & A With Trailblazer Owner, Paul Allen.

Blazers vs Memphis Grizzlies

Welcome back Bonzi Wells. I may get chastised by some for saying it, but regardless of what did and didn't happen, I hold no ill will for Bonzi. I think moving him to Memphis has been good for him as well as the Blazers.

My hope is that fans refrain from booing. This behavior puts the fan in the very same position they put Bonzi in. Fans should either clap politely or not at all, the booing is really unnecessary. There is only one player that deserves a downpour of boos-and that is Kobe! ;)

I noticed something has definitely changed about Bonzi. If you google his name, it takes several pages before you see anything regarding trouble. It didn't used to be that way. I am glad to see him staying out of trouble.

Now, for the Grizzlies, life hasn't been so good. They are 2-5 for the young season. However, we are 3-3. We have the home court advantage but Memphis could be primed for a win. They lost a tight one in Seattle Monday. I have a feeling that the Griz see a game against Portland as a winnable game for them. I am inclined to think that the Blazers are thinking the same thing and are looking to get their second win in a row.

We KNOW Bonzi is going to want to take it to the Blazers but the question is, will he? We know all too well how unpredictable Bonzi's game is. He may be more motivated than he has been, we shouldn't ignore that. Up to now Bonzi is (as of 11/14) 28-76 and 3-7 from 3 point range. He is averaging around 10 PPG. (stats). I'm not too worried about Bonzi. It is Gasol and Swift that will demand attention. This game will need to be a highly defensive effort by the Blazers.

I said Bonzi will be motivated, so will the Blazers. I'm looking forward to it!

*Jason Fleming of Hoopsworld gives a far more technical (and better) analysis than me! I am hoping to include his reports with each game post.

Jason's Blazer Gameday

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: Oh my. Oh my my my my. No offense. No defense. No energy. Did I say no defense?
The Blazers are in big trouble.

Bonzi torched the Blazers. With every boo he got better. I admit-after it was clear we were out of the game I began to enjoy seeing Bonzi score in the face of the booers. I was cheering him on.

There is no need to analyze and talk trades and coach firings here-the boards are lighting up with that today.

My big gripe about last night is that Cheeks didn't put Geno Carlisle in until about the last minute and a half. I wanted to see him play. I am convinced it is time to waive Q and sign this guy.

Rick Brunson - Happy Nomad

"...Brunson, 32, a reserve point guard with the Los Angeles Clippers, has played for six teams, including two, the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls, twice. He also has played for the same coach, Mike Dunleavy, in two cities.

With all that movement, one thing has remained a constant in Brunson's career: the lack of a fully-guaranteed contract to start a season. That's why the best day of the year for Brunson is Jan. 10; on that date, NBA contracts become guaranteed for the rest of the season. That is true whether players stick with a team or are cut.

"When that day comes and he's still on a team, it's time to pop the champagne," said Leon Rose, Brunson's Cherry Hill-based agent.

Fans looking for information about Brunson in the Clippers media guide, don't bother. Considered a long shot to make the team this season, he isn't even listed there.

"That's about the third time I've been with a team where I'm not in the media guide," a smiling Brunson said before Friday night's 110-96 loss to the Knicks in Madison Square Garden...."

The collective bargaining agreement mandates that players with a minimum 8 year's in the league, will earn a minimum of $995.046.

"...Sometimes, guys don't realize how easy they've got it," Brunson said. "I try to enlighten them and tell them to enjoy this, because it might not be like this forever...."

Portland gave Rick his first shot at playing in the NBA. Rick has always been content with whatever playing time he gets. He appreciates being in the league. The NBA needs guys like this to counter balance those that think otherwise.

Ninth Annual Blazer's Harvest Dinner

Monday night the Blazers put on their 9th annual Harvest Dinner. This is a great event that helps a lot of people.

"...In addition to more than 4,000 meals the Trail Blazers will hand out at the Rose Garden, the staff and team members will take Harvest Dinner on the road via the North/Northeast Meals-On-Wheels program, delivering meals to homebound seniors.

"This is an event that P.J. Carlisemo started nine years ago and has had such an impact on our organization that several of our players who have moved on have started similar events with their new teams," said Traci Rose, Trail Blazers director of community relations. "The first couple of years we served an average of 2,000 and since then have seen a greater need each year serving 5,000 people strong each of the past two years."

The dinner consisted of :
1,100 pounds of turkey
1,100 pounds of ham
1,000 pounds of fresh fruit salad
48 heads of lettuce
1,000 pounds of stuffing
1,000 pounds of vegetables
50 gallons of gravy
75 gallons of cranberry sauce
10 lbs of salt
10 lbs of black ground pepper
9,000 butter pats
400 dozen dinner rolls
480 pumpkin pies
250 gallons of coffee
2,000 pints of milk
10,000 napkins
5,000 plates
3,000 bottles of water
240 gallons of Coca-Cola products.

What's Missing?

David Stern was recently asked about recent troubles in the NBA, for example, Kobe Bryant, Latrell Spreewell, Ron Artest, Marcus Fizer. Stern's response was this:

"...Upon broaching the subject, Stern smiled that disarming smile of his as he munched on chocolate candies and washed them down with a Diet Coke, while sitting in an office at Sonics headquarters.

He removed his glasses and let out a long sigh before saying: "We are the one of the largest providers of reality television in the world. On and off of the court. And that's what's going to happen from time to time...."

"...And all you do is you keep emphasizing the fact that, like the Sonics, with the team and foundation and the players who buy tickets for underprivileged kids, that there are thousands of good deeds done and what you guys in the media do is cover our not-so-good deeds. You cover our weaknesses, not our strengths. And I've become accustomed and resigned to it..."

What I couldn't help noticing is that for once, a story about bad player behavior in the NBA doesn't include one Portland Trailblazer! We are completely missing from the story! That is indeed a step inthe right direction!

Ruben Patterson or Darius Miles?

The story about Ruben's life changes is also revealing of an emerging Blazer story that Blazer fans are becoming more and more aware of. Here is the article I am referring to in the Oregonian: Last Issue Is Matter Of Minutes.

The question is, where Ruben and Darius fit on this team? The story tells how Ruben was expected to get very limited minutes, with Darius getting the contract and picked to be sixth man basically. However, you would be remiss to say that Darius is living up to his part of the bargain.

As coach Cheeks says "Ruben has been unbelievable". I agree completely. Darius has been sloppy and unproductive. In fact, I have thought that Darius is almost dependant on Ruben when it comes to making his presence known on the floor! This is a growing problem. D Miles had better wake up and smell the coffee because there is a "junk yard dog" nipping at his heels.

Compare: Ruben Patterson stats and Darius Miles stats. (82games)
What is unfair for Ruben is that much of how he helps the team does not show up on paper. There isn't a stat for disrupting plays, diving for balls, reeking havoc....that is what Ruben does best.

Another Blazer Turns a Corner.

Ruben Patterson has been one of the guys that people point a finger at as an example of why they refer to the team as "jailblazers". It has never been a fair assessment but no one can argue that we have had our share of troubles.

However, through trouble, people have been known to find great strength. I am inspired by those who are able to find the ability to turn their lives around. Damon Stoudamire has been an inspiration to many. Now it seems that Ruben Patterson may be following in his footsteps. This is indeed encouraging news.

The Trailblazers NEED Ruben Patterson. Derek Anderson has often been the one that troubled players turn to. I appreciate his willingness to help them. Sometimes, all it takes is a good friend.
From today's Daily Herald:

Blazers follows new trail: Troubled forward Ruben Patterson was one of the prime reasons the Portland Trail Blazers were dubbed "Jail Blazers" in recent years.
Now Patterson says he's a changed man after ditching alcohol and finding God. The transformation began this summer when he woke up with a familiar hangover.

"I just closed my eyes and said, 'Ruben, you have to stop this,'æ" Patterson said in The Oregonian. "I'm not going to lie. I was drinking a lot this summer. I was always waking up with a headache, hung over. It was taking over my body."

Patterson turned to deeply religious teammate Derek Anderson for help.
"If you look at us, you would think they shouldn't even hang together," Anderson said. "I look at it as I'm the calm guy who can calm his storm."

Is Nash Testing the Waters?

It seems John Nash does think that Jayson Williams is at least, an option. I think Nash is making these statements so he can judge reactions. I don't see how this could happen this season with the reckless manslaughter trial set for January.

"...He will be able to help a lot of N.B.A. teams as a backup," Nash, a former Nets general manager, said Friday from Portland. "With his age and experience, he could be a viable presence....

"Teams will have to weigh the risk-reward factor," Nash said. "Usually in our league, decisions are basketball-slash-financial. This will be basketball-slash-public relations. ...

"In our case, I know Jayson Williams and I know he has a good heart. He does a lot of good things without needing to beat his chest. But Jayson was also irreverent, he thought he was invincible and he had a history, even before I got to New Jersey, of being a little reckless."..."

Joe Dumars seems to think that Jayson deserves a second chance and that he may very well get one.

"..."I think sports has always been the one place where you could count on second chances," Dumars said. "I think if there's a team out there that thinks Jayson can help them, that they would sign him."..."

Suprised? It seems Jayson worked out for Cleveland as well. It is clear that the idea is being considered-and in more places than Portland.

Personally, I think this would be a major step in the WRONG direction for Portland.

The Humane Society Praises The Blazers.

It's disheartening to me to know that these activities are as popular as they are. The Humane Society wants all pro sport franchises to follow the Trailblazer's lead. Who would have thought it would take something as horrible as dog fighting to put the Blazers in a positive position? It's ironic to say the least.

"...The HSUS urges all sports franchises to follow the lead of the Portland Trail Blazers and send a clear message that involvement in dog fighting is unacceptable.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s department is investigating this case with the assistance of the Oregon Humane Society, which is not affiliated with The HSUS...."

Blazers vs Raptors

It's payback time.

I hope the guys can pick themselves up by their sneaker laces and take care of business with the Raptors. I think being home will help. This is the 4th game of a 6 game road trip for Toronto. It will also be game 2 of a back to back.

In addition the Raptors will be coming off an 88-87 loss to Seattle. (thank you Antonio Daniels)The Blazer's last go 'round with Toronto was brutal and they ended up losing after being stung by a 3 by Vince Carter. Paul Pierce's stinger Wednesday may still linger in Blazer minds. The Blazer's haven't played since.
It was a very ugly road trip and I am sure the Blazers are happy to be home.

I am hoping to see a high spirited game. A win tommorrow is much needed!

UPDATE: Good grief! I can not believe we let a 20 point lead disappear in what seemed only minutes. It was terrible to watch! When it was down to the wire with 12+ seconds left, and we are up by 3, I'd love to know WHY DIDN'T WE FOUL THEM?

I hate this kind of game! We all stood there believing the Raptors had tied the game after getting THREE three attempts on the last possession! Quickly it became apparent that there was a question, the "oh man's" turned into "oh pleases"...of course they won't show the crowd the stinking replay....We all stared at Delaney watching the review. Mo Cheeks left the court. The Raptors were all pointing the way players do when they say the basket counts. The Blazers were waving their hands as if to say "safe" and "no basket". I don't think anyone really saw whether that red light was on or not but it sure got quiet when that ball went in. The crowd had been muzzled. It took about a minute-it seemed much longer, but finally Delaney's gesture matched that of the Blazers. The streamers came down and we all went home breathing a huge sigh of relief. Finally, we came out on the winning side of a "final seconds" battle. I do have one question-DARIUS MILES, WHERE ARE YOU?

Anyway, we got the win and that is great. I'll be happy to take it. I liked the hussle I saw most of the night, especially that of Derek Anderson. Zach was pretty great too. We lost a big lead but we all know these things happen. Think about it, at Boston we were the ones that devoured a 20 point lead and nearly won the game. The last time we battled Toronto, we pushed them to the limit and they got the big game winning shot. The other night the Cavs had a big comeback over Indiana.

This is basketball, anything can happen. No lead is big enough. This is the lesson I hope the Blazers take from this game. No lead is big enough to get content and lazy. Always fight as if you are behind-always.

There is no such thing as useless information!

Have you ever wondered what the Blazer logo stands for?

Find this answer and others here!
*I'm going to add this to the links list as well*

UPDATE: There is an alternate explanation, one that I have known, that the pinwheel is a representation of players on the court "5 on 5". You can read about this here. (nba.com)
*hat tip "XericX

It is curious to me that there are two pretty different explanations? Hmmm

The Stars Are Coming Out For Dud's.

"...Chris Dudley has made too many charitable and civic contributions on his own to mention over the years. Now the former Trail Blazer center is going to enlist some help.

Dudley has an impressive cast of sports and entertainment celebrities who will converge on Oba Restaurante in the Pearl District on Thursday to participate in a Celebrity Hold ’Em Tournament, a benefit for Dudley’s Foundation for Children With Diabetes.

Among the names involved in the invitation-only event: Actresses Daryl Hannah, Mimi Rogers and Kathy Griffin, actor Kevin Kline, talk-show host Ricki Lake, screenwriter Mike Rich and, from the world of sports, Richie Sexson, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, Terry Porter, Jerome Kersey, Maurice Cheeks, Damon Stoudamire and Sebastian Telfair..."

Jay Williams Recovery Blog.

I ran across this today. Jay Williams is a member of the NBA "Blog Squad".

Jay Williams has been "blogging" his recovery and planned NBA return. His determination is to be admired. It takes a lot of inner strength to overcome the odds in situations such as his. Jason was in a terrible motorcycle accident in June of 03. (Source Duke Chronicle).
He was then waived by the Chicago Bulls.

Jay's blog is a neat way to tap into the positive attitude this young man possesses.
I believe we will see J-Will on the court again. I encourage everyone to take a look. Jay's Blog

OK-I know, what does this have to do with the Blazers?
Well, nothing really. However, while taking a look at Jay's blog I discovered that our very own John Nash and Maurice Cheeks are members of the NBA Blog Squad too!

I will post a link under "links" for this blog so we can keep tabs on what they say!

Roster change and a bomb.

What's the latest news with the team?

Quick's take:"The Blazers are...in the process of placing Richie Frahm on the injured list and they are signing Geno Carlisle...Also, the Blazers observed a 30-minute workout session by Jayson Williams, the former Nets' center." Jason Quick Chat

I have no problems giving Geno Carlisle another shot..but say again about Jayson Williams?

I think they have decided to follow Whitsitt's rules rather than stick to the 25 Point Pledge!

UPDATE: I have heard that the Blazers (Nash et al) just happened to be where Jayson was working out and they stopped to watch. The Blazers did not set this up. There is talk that they were impressed with what they saw. So...it's just a rumor. Also-if you are familiar with Jason Quick-you need to know that you should always take his reports with a grain of salt.

For those who do not know...

Ron Artest has a new rap album coming out November 23rd. *sarcasm intended*
What a goof.

I know, nothing to do with Blazers. It was just an incredibly stupid story I felt obliged to share.

The refs have come out of hiding!

It's about time I say!

Blazers-Boston

No way, no how, the Blazers win this game.

Paul Pierce and Gary Payton will mop the floor with us. Our shots won't fall and we will go home 0-3 on this road trip.

;)

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: My plan almost worked! Man-I can't believe how many games we have lost due to "miracle" shots. I know the team is devastated so I'll be mild in my reactions. (like they'd ever see this!) Still, I respect what they did in Boston and if the ref had called that 6th foul on Pierce, as he should have, it may have ended differently. The thing is, had we played good basketball in the first half it wouldn't have been a one shot game.

argh!

The Floor or the Bench?

We have most of our team from the end of last season. They should already be "gelling". They are not. It seems to be the same old mystery. We have the talent, but for unknown reasons it doesn't manifest on the floor in a consistent manner. The only player that seems to be reasonably dependable (on the floor) is Zach Randolph. He averages double doubles regularly. Zach has his own "All-Star" aspirations and I admire his ability to "go for it". He did this last year and ended up with the Most Improved Player award. Honestly, I don't see Zach as an issue. I do see his efforts being thwarted by an overall lack of team-well-something.

I can't help but consider the idea that the problems on the floor is a result of a problem on the bench. Who? Mo Cheeks, that is who. Mo is a well liked person and has been, if anything else, the glue that has held this team together through what seems to be a never ending onslaught of problems that can be likened to juvenile delinquency. There would be no other reason to remove Mo Cheeks than out of sheer necessity.

Many of these problems have gone away but the damage lingers. Damon's ability to turn his life around is proof that change is possible. But he, along with others, seem to be at a place where they are ready to move on. They are looking for new direction. They need more.

I appreciate Mo's work at holding these guys together. Now that some are gone, and others have either made changes, or are trying to, there seems to be the need for challenge. The team needs a more powerful force pushing them and forcing them to focus their new found energies into the game. It may sound philosophical in nature but burn out is a real thing and it can be damaging.

I think the Blazers are burned out on Mo and Mo is burned out on the team. For either to grow and find new success, a change may be the only answer. As I said, we have the talent on the floor.

Future Blazers?

If you weren't paying attention to the draft you may not be aware that Portland drafted Ha Seung-Jin. Ha is a 7"3" center. There has been word that this kid is looking to be a good prospect. Ha is the first Korean ever drafted by an NBA team.

Ha Seung-Jin will begin his career playing for the new ABA expansion team, The Portland Reign. Their season begins November 18th.

Meet Ha Seung-Jin

The Portland Reign has named six players that have made the team via tryouts.
They are:

Charles McKinney (Oregon State)
Brandon Payton (brother of Gary Payton)
John Outlaw (brother of Blazer Travis Outlaw)
Robert Day (Benson High School)
John Mietus (Lewis&Clark College)
Chris Baert (Redmond High School)

The coach is Antonio Harvey

Blazers-Nets

Lucky for the Blazers, Jason Kidd will not be playing tonight. The Blazers really have no excuse to lose this game. The Blazers have been known to play down to their opponents, and this has cost them many a winnable game. I don't even want to see a glimmer of this tonight!

How the Blazers handle the Nets will give us an idea of what this year's team is made of.

Tonight's game is the first of a back to back. Richard Jefferson and ZO are about all the Nets have! Keep these two in check and a win should be forthcoming.

Tonight's game should be a reasonably easy win, allowing the Blazers to have more energy tomorrow to face Pierce and Payton in Boston.

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: I not only saw a glimmer of the "play down to your competition bug"...

IT WAS GLARING IN MY FACE THE ENTIRE GAME!

24.4% ? What is this?

I'll tell you what it is. It is the Blazer's game shooting percentage! The Blazers played terribly. They stunk up the place so bad I could smell it all the way on the west coast. I have nothing good to say about this game. The Blazers seemed to forget all about their inside game and completely lost any outside luck they have had.

I said that this would be an indicater of what this team is made of. Unfortunately I am not seeing much change from the team that couldn't make the playoffs last year.

No excuses-none at all. The Nets tried to hand them this game on a golden platter and the Blazers just wouldn't take it.

One thing about it. If there was any chance at all the Kidd was coming to Portland-it is gone now!

This game put the ug in ugly! 4 points off of 23 turnovers? How can that be?

Box Score

I wonder, can we get ZO?

More tragedy for Ben Wallace

"...Wallace got news Monday morning that his oldest brother, Sam Wallace Jr., had died of brain cancer. He played in Monday night's victory over the Clippers, scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. He was expected to leave after the game for White Hall, Ala., where the family is making burial plans. Sam Jr. was 61...." DetroitFreePress

Ben has now lost 3 close family members since he became a Piston, each while on a west coast road trip.

Ben isn't a Blazer but he is a much loved player in the league. I am sure many prayers are with him.

Reef wants to remain a Blazer, but doubts he will.

"...I'd rather be with these guys," Abdur-Rahim said, motioning to his Trail Blazer teammates as they finished up practice yesterday at John Jay College. They play the Nets tonight. "I don't want to keep moving around...."

"...I'll be surprised if I'm here the whole year," said Abdur-Rahim, who is averaging 18.4 ppg through three games. "My concern is that if they were going to trade me, I wish they had done it over the summer...." New York Post

I know Shareef was upset about playing time during the offseason and demanded a trade but I sure hope it doesn't happen. He seems to have changed his mind. SAR and Zach play the same position and it has been hard to find a way to allow them both to play without forcing one out of position. This has happened to SAR far more than Zach. Zach was just signed to a "franchise" contract and that means less room for Shareef.

So far Shareef has played great basketball. I am sure this is making it harder for Nash to make decisions regarding what to do. It also makes him more attractive to other potential teams. Some Blazer fans are apprehensive of banking our entire franchise on Zach Randolph. Zach has had his share of off court issues and has already missed a team flight this season. SAR has had ZERO problems.

It's a tough call. My hope is that a way is found to keep Shareef Abdur Rahim a Blazer. If anything, Reef is showing what a fine gentleman he is in the midst of Blazer turmoil.

Shareef is a devout Muslim and this is Ramadan. Some say this is how he is able to handle this situation. This is what he has to say about his faith:

"...With anything I deal with, I feel my faith can get me through it," Abdur-Rahim said. "Whether it's an argument, or something like basketball, I just try to be the person I believe who I am, and have faith in God. I'm not a person who believes you pray, pray, pray and things will happen. In the Quran, it tells you that you have faith and then you vigorously work. So I have faith and I try to bust my tail and work hard. And from that, good things will happen...." Read more about SAR and his faith here (source Oregonlive)

Blazers vs Raptors

This will be the first game of a three game road trip. The Blazers won both preseason games against the Raptors, once in Toronto, and once at home.

There have been rumors that VC has been asking for a trade but as of late, he seems to have chilled on that. He also has been facing legal issues off the court. Who knows how this will affect VC's game, if at all. I wouldn't bank on it.

This is a game that Portland can win. Zach and Darius were keys winning the preseason games and one of those games was without Carter. The first game was won by 3 points and the second only 2. The guys will have to bring their "A" games and be very aware that the Raptors are going to be more than ready to take it to the Blazers. This game will be very dependant on Blazer defense because the Raptor offense is superior to ours. However, defense is quickly becoming the Blazers "M.O". I think the Blazers will win this game and they will keep Vince and Jalen under 40 combined. Yep-it's gonna happen.

UPDATE: Thanks to a "Kobe" shot by VC, Jalen and VC combined for 41 and beat the Blazers.
What a bummer. I'm OK with it though. I think itmay be best to lose one now so the guys aren't obsessed with a winning streak. We can still go 2-1 on this road trip. GO BLAZERS!

This ticks me off. With 75 mil Zach can afford a VERY DEPENDABLE ALARM CLOCK.

Q is as good as gone.

It is clear that we will not be seeing Q as a Blazer again. He has had more chances than most to, as Q says, "put this behind me". Now he will pay the consequences of his bad choices, something that will hopefully help him more than it hurts him.

Unfortunately, he has devalued himself to the entire league and robbed the Blazers of any chances to trade.

"...There are a lot of factors involved in this,” Brothers says. “You can’t put a timetable on these things. We are moving through the process. It takes time.” The sides are trying to negotiate a settlement.

It may result in Portland waiving Woods, then going to arbitration to void his contract ($1.13 million this season) on the basis of conduct detrimental to the team. Brothers wants his client paid in full and wants the Blazers to drop their indefinite suspension.

The Atlanta-based agent has filed a grievance with the NBA Players Association, claiming that the Blazers’ suspension was illegal since the police investigation has yet to result in Woods being charged with a crime. Blazer management believes the suspension is just, citing a pattern of poor conduct by Woods..." Source: Portland Tribune

Is it fair to say that the Blazers are STILL paying for Bob Witsitt's gambles?

UPDATE: . Bloody paw prints found at Wood's home. I truly wish this wasn't happening.

Blazers-Clippers

The season is FINALLY getting started here at home. Tonight is the first home game of the season-I hear we are going to get baseball caps.

It is always a bit hard to get back into the grind of going to games (I have to drive about an hour each way). I'm not complaining though because I know it won't be long before the obsession kicks into gear again!

Tonight we play the Clippers. Former Blazer coach Mike Dunlevey will be here. I see the Clippers had a really good game against Seattle last night. Brian Simmons made a case for himself by scoring a career high 30 points! Elton Brand added another 20. I hope these are "flukes". What caught my eye is that they outscored Seattle on the fast break 16-2!

This worries me since it is clear that the Blazers are vulnerable when it comes to turnovers and getting back on defense. I am hopeful that Simmons will "simmer" down and that the excitement of the first home game will help the Blazers gain some momentum and find a groove of their own.

GO BLAZERS!

What a game! I can say that the level of excitement was very high last night. It was a great change of pace. The evening started with a rousing rendition of "God Bless America" sang by
Bill Schonely. The crowd singing along made it special. It always gets me when the whole building starts singing. I wish it could be that way all the time.

Theo got several early blocks that made the crowd go crazy. He managed to tie Walton's record-again-at 9 blocks for the game. The "Blazer Block Party" is in full swing. Foul trouble late in the game kept him from the record. He sure was trying! I have no doubt we will see Walton's record smashed-and soon!

Damon had 7 assists by the end of the first quarter. He also received his "Community Assist" award. Ruben, as always, was the energizer bunny. That guy is EVERYWHERE. At one point he plowed into coach Cheeks, pinning him to the scorer's table, right next to Wheels. It looked like he was in pain for a while after that. DA had a good game as well. Zach with another double double, and SAR making his presence known sealed the deal.

On the way home we were on the Max. We were jammed in the car like sardines. At one point someone hollered "we got a Laker fan in here", immediately the ENTIRE car began to boo. It was fun, it was exciting, it was hope. Everyone seems to be so hungry for the days of "rip city". Young guys were chanting "Blazers Blazers Blazers" repeatedly as we made our way to the car at Lloyd Center. I know it is early, way way too early, to make any season predictions, but last night should be savored. It was a great game. The fans are jazzed.

The guys got a hard fought win on the road and a solid win at home. They are pumped, they are positive. They go on the road for a 3 game run in the east. These trips are good for the team. It's bonding time...it's team building time. I'm looking forward to a good season.

Box Score

By the way-Simmons only got 4. heh heh heh

Community Assist

Damon Stoudamire has been awarded this month's (October) NBA "Community Assist" award.

"...As the recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award, Stoudamire will receive the David Robinson Plaque, with the inscription, "Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson, who improved the community piece by piece." ...
In addition to the plaque, a $5,000 gift will be given to the Northeast Neighborhood Gang Outreach Program in Portland in Stoudamire's honor. ..."

Damon is the first Blazer to get this award. This is a very nice step for Damon. Considering all he has been through and how well he has been able to turn his life around, Damon can now be considered a role model. I'm proud of him

Congratulations Damon and THANK YOU for being a POSITIVE role model!

Blazers vs Warriors

Well...they all count now! The season has begun!

The Blazers have been beaten by GS twice already during pre-season. Tonight it is time to get down to business.

GS seems to always have our number. It is time to break that "curse" too!

GO BLAZERS!

UPDATE: BLAZER'S WIN (box score nba.com)

What an ugly ugly game. Great game by SAR. Bad games from DA & Damon. Again our offense suffered. NVE got a few 3's and scored 20 points to help get the win! I thought that might happen since he is in a position of "get back" at his old team.

42.8% overall shooting isn't too bad, well OK, it stinks, but we really need to do something about the TURNOVERS!

Hey-we're undefeated! 1-0

Letter From Z-BO "I want to be an All-Star"

"...Being named the Most Improved Player of the 2003-04 season was a true honor. I was so excited when I found out, and to be able to share it with fans in Portland was great. Being named MIP was an accomplishment, but now I want to make you even prouder and represent Portland on the all-star team and help us get back into the play-offs..."

Dear Trailblazer fans...

My hope is that Zach does make the All-Star team. He has worked hard, he didn't get the MIP for nothing. However, Zach has to not only work hard on his game, he must work hard to stay out of trouble. I believe if Zach does this, we may very well have a Blazer representing us at the All Star game this season. We have been overlooked too many times!

I think I'll see if I can get Zach's mom's number, we may need to call her to remind Zach to behave!

Odds of a Blazer 2005 NBA Championship

Portland 55-1 40-1

HUMPH! How can they come to this conclusion already?
