Blazers-Clippers
The season is FINALLY getting started here at home. Tonight is the first home game of the season-I hear we are going to get baseball caps.
It is always a bit hard to get back into the grind of going to games (I have to drive about an hour each way). I'm not complaining though because I know it won't be long before the obsession kicks into gear again!
Tonight we play the Clippers. Former Blazer coach Mike Dunlevey will be here. I see the Clippers had a really good game against Seattle last night. Brian Simmons made a case for himself by scoring a career high 30 points! Elton Brand added another 20. I hope these are "flukes". What caught my eye is that they outscored Seattle on the fast break 16-2!
This worries me since it is clear that the Blazers are vulnerable when it comes to turnovers and getting back on defense. I am hopeful that Simmons will "simmer" down and that the excitement of the first home game will help the Blazers gain some momentum and find a groove of their own.
GO BLAZERS!
What a game! I can say that the level of excitement was very high last night. It was a great change of pace. The evening started with a rousing rendition of "God Bless America" sang by
Bill Schonely. The crowd singing along made it special. It always gets me when the whole building starts singing. I wish it could be that way all the time.
Theo got several early blocks that made the crowd go crazy. He managed to tie Walton's record-again-at 9 blocks for the game. The "Blazer Block Party" is in full swing. Foul trouble late in the game kept him from the record. He sure was trying! I have no doubt we will see Walton's record smashed-and soon!
Damon had 7 assists by the end of the first quarter. He also received his "Community Assist" award. Ruben, as always, was the energizer bunny. That guy is EVERYWHERE. At one point he plowed into coach Cheeks, pinning him to the scorer's table, right next to Wheels. It looked like he was in pain for a while after that. DA had a good game as well. Zach with another double double, and SAR making his presence known sealed the deal.
On the way home we were on the Max. We were jammed in the car like sardines. At one point someone hollered "we got a Laker fan in here", immediately the ENTIRE car began to boo. It was fun, it was exciting, it was hope. Everyone seems to be so hungry for the days of "rip city". Young guys were chanting "Blazers Blazers Blazers" repeatedly as we made our way to the car at Lloyd Center. I know it is early, way way too early, to make any season predictions, but last night should be savored. It was a great game. The fans are jazzed.
The guys got a hard fought win on the road and a solid win at home. They are pumped, they are positive. They go on the road for a 3 game run in the east. These trips are good for the team. It's bonding time...it's team building time. I'm looking forward to a good season.
Box Score
By the way-Simmons only got 4. heh heh heh
